Pet Therapy has so far been discussed from our perspective here at JUSTSIAMESE.COM, where it occurs as part of the Cat Connect that develops as a result of Cat Parenting,.
However, Pet Therapy does occur in a structured way (actual therapy sessions designed by a therapist) in a formal therapy setting (e.g. in a hospital or nursing home), and it is also known as Animal Assisted Therapy. In a formal therapy setting, the person, or patient who is receiving the therapy usually experiences an illness and / or may have limited social contact.
In this scenario, the benefits from Pet Therapy are the same as we discussed on our Health & Wellbeing Benefits page.
The reasons why they occur are the same as those outlined in our Can a Cat Save your Life pages, except for one difference. Which is in a formal therapy setting, a patient has no responsibility for the care of the cat (i.e. feeding, changing litter, health needs etc). Meaning the relationship between the cat and the patient is uncomplicated and unconditional.
Additionally in formal Pet Therapy or Animal Assisted Therapy sessions, it is important to understand:
-
The animals which are used as pet therapy animals are selected based on their temperament ensuring they enjoy and are comfortable with interacting and being handled by many different people in varying environments.
-
The parent of the pet therapy animal does need to be able to facilitate the interaction between the pet therapy animal and patient and be able to intervene to prevent a negative situation occurring (i.e. if a patient inadvertently is hurting the animal or vice versa etc).
-
The hospital or nursing home (or other setting) may have requirements regarding qualifications or experience of a pet therapy animal and parent (handler) and their affiliation with appropriate organizations. This may include providing evidence that your animal has no health issues which could affect the vulnerable populations in these settings (i.e. it is not just a matter of taking your beautiful cat and turning up to a nursing home to share the love!)
Getting a cat in your lap whether it be in a formal or informal way can benefit all.
