Organs =
Esophagus – This is a tube which is part of the distribution system and its’ Specialised Task is to deliver food from the cats’ mouth to their stomach.
Stomach – Specialised Task is to digest food (break it down into its component parts). The Stomach contains digestive enzymes which aid this process. These component parts of food include items which the body needs for daily functioning (e.g. proteins, sugar, water etc) and waste products.
Liver – Specialised Tasks of the Liver include:
-
Storing broken down food products such as sugar (glycogen);
-
Making proteins from the broken down food products.
-
Removing toxins from the blood and breaks them down into waste products which are not toxic and can be exited from the body without causing harm.
Gallbladder – Specialised Task is storing and secreting a substance called bile (a digestive enzyme for fats)
Pancreas – Specialised Tasks include secreting:
-
Digestive enzymes such as amylase and lipase
-
Hormones (chemical messengers) such as insulin
Small Intestine – This organ is connected to the Stomach and its Specialised Task is absorbing the broken down food components which are required by the body for daily functioning and delivering them to the bloodstream so they can be distributed around the body to cells/organs. The remaining food components which are not absorbed travel through and exit the Small Intestine and enter into the connecting Large Intestine.
Large Intestine – Specialised Task is extracting water from the remaining food components (waste products), and these waste products are then formed into faeces and pushed through the remainder of the large intestine until they reach the end, (the anus) which is where the faeces exits the cats’ body.
Body System =
Digestive System: The Mouth, Teeth, Salivary Glands, Esophagus, Stomach, Small Intestine, Large Intestine, Pancreas, Liver and Gall Bladder make up this system.
The Certain Activity of the Digestive System is to break down food into its component parts and extract the parts the body needs (i.e. nutrients, protein, sugar and water etc) for daily functioning. The Digestive System also works to exit the remaining food components (waste) from the cats’ body in the form of faeces.
